Finding Effective Trading Strategies – Forex Trading Systems

January 12th, 2010 Tom K Kearns No comments

Finding the most effective strategies in any situation could stop most of us from falling for our subconscious minds to break down the situation or better yet ourselves. A question comes to mind from the Jungian Personality Test that I have recently taken:

The process of searching for a solution is more important to you than the solution itself

True or False

We might be able to get just what we want if the moves, capable of bringing about the good and helpful to our ventures, were known. In any predicament it helps and not educating yourself fully is one ailing factor that may leave you with an unfortunate outcome not to mention a superficial end result.

In general, money and investment is a big “situation” that harps at us like a continuous aching back. It may not be a good idea to move into any market unprepared: it’s also not a good idea to focus only on the money without thinking it through completely. Many helpful and effective maneuvers are required at a place like the Forex market which enable you to succeed and be content with any investment you wish to make. With research, counselors in the field, and help from the internet you can acquire want you hoped for.

Finding effective strategies of the Forex market:

1) Internet research can be one of the most helpful educational tools you can use. Reading reviews and ratings on Forex, seeking the in-depth details of Forex can be of immense aid. Jumping onto Forex forums and blogs can help you get the inside scoop; no thy enemy and thy friend. And try to find other free resources for information on the best trading strategies in the Forex market. Most of the time many expert traders hop onto the forums and want to share techniques and tips on how to trade successfully.

As you enter into the Forex market it may be a good idea to seek counsel who is reliable. It’s also best to find one who does not intend to profit from you.

3) It is important to review the strategy you wish to use. Then look for unbiased or independent reviews on it. This can come as an advantage in fishing out the good and bad of it, which can help assist in your next step.

4) If you have found the Forex trading strategy you want to work with you must test it out. A real time trading experiment is crucial for you and your success. Make use of a micro or demo account in experimenting with the strategy; this way you can try it on for size without losing any money or pride.

Some Final Advice:

It is crucial to plan as you enter the Forex trading market. The problems that mostly affect traders are their emotions and stress, especially new traders, be sure to plan.

Traders also get caught by their greed or fear which both lead to loss. Following the trend and planning can lead to a more successful career in the world of trading. When trading be sure to keep it simple.

Obama’s Stimulus Plan and The Forex Market

January 3rd, 2010 Tom K Kearns No comments

America’s days when waving the flag with pride and shooting off fireworks in hopes to remind us of our independence and those that fought for us, has unfortunately dwindled in its pride and prosperity with a economic downhill said to be the worst since the Great Depression. However, despite all the greed and negligence of our government, the American people and our newly appointed President Barack Obama have not given up on the young and strong U.S.A nor should they. President Barack Obama has indeed infiltrated hope and prosperity to our beloved America; now after shouting out promises let’s see if he can deliver.

After the announcement of President Barack Obama’s ‘Stimulus Package’ plan people are pumped with anticipation and the investors and traders of the economy are oozing with less risk and embarking on a path of more stability, in a less than stable environment.

The Stimulus Package

Refurbishing trust in the finance industry is its main purpose, aka senior executives getting HUGE payouts, not so trusting, and for the investors thwarting fear and panic like the ones imbedded in 2008; as well as boost the economy and bring aid to the people. Numerous amounts of helpings for feasting like a Thanksgiving dinner is included in President Barack Obama’s stimulus package; immediate relief for families is offered, such as tax cuts, unemployment benefits extensions and suspension on their taxes, and for the first time homebuyers a tax credit. Like Santa Claus at Christmas sending tax relief to improve education, alternative energy production, healthcare, invest in science and research technology, and “modernize federal infrastructure”. These tax rebates embolden the consumers spending, and aids to their confidence towards U.S. economy.

The Forex Market and Obama’s Stimulus Package

Stimulus meaning to intend stimulation, incentive or spur; market is a place to sell, promote, a bazaar in synonyms, seems to go hand in hand with each other. President Barack Obama’s stimulus package is indeed meant to add stimuli to the U.S. economy, in hopes to uproar the downturn; in so creating jobs for the people. Spelling out a hefty approximation of $800 billion, undoubtedly leaving republicans, of most, and some democrats running scared due to the fact this is the largest investment in the U.S.A infrastructure since the 1950’s. Contradictory to investors and traders of the Forex market, this enables them to loosen the leash per se on the stomping grounds of investments and trades.

Coined as the rescue plan, traders and investors are gambling on looking past the low economic stance and the decreased job figures, and instead factoring in the stimulus package as an asset to help lift stocks; bringing risk to the guillotine. With the dear sentiments of risks upgrading, high yielding currencies have heightened along with the hopes of the financial world. However, despite all the happy sensitivities towards the outcome of currency markets, investors and traders are fully aware there is no accurate forecast foretelling the future of their perceived desires. Analysts have been like fortune tellers advising that economy and their governments that there are still the overwhelming duties of mending and placing them back on the right path; corporate earnings still have the outlook of worsening. May hope and restructure prevail; never loosing faith.

Choosing A Forex Signal Provider – A Look At Win Percentage

December 24th, 2009 Tom K Kearns No comments

It would seem that the closer a trader is to 100% winning trades, the better trader they are. On the flip side it would seem that the closer they are to 0%, the worse they are. While it is certainly true that you would like to win the most trades possible, there is more to it than that. I would argue that a 95% win rate is infinitely worse than a 65% win rate. Hopefully this article will help to tell you why.

Our first look will be at those traders with a low win rate, say those with a classification within the 0% to 40% range. If the trader falls closer to the 0% rate one would think him to be a genuine loser. In truth, most in this category are losing traders. But you will sometimes see a trader trying to snag really large moves with really tight stops. This guy may show an extremely low win percentage but could still be a very successful player.

The next range is from ~40% to ~70%. This is the range most winning traders will be in. The reason these traders win is not because they pick a ton of winning trades and rarely have a loser. They may in fact have more losing trades than winning trades. The reason they are able to win is that they properly manage their trades once they are open. They use reasonable stops that will often be executed. This obviously results in a losing trade, but a small loser. These small losers are only a fraction of the size of their winning trades. These are most often the traders that have the ability to cut their losses but let their winners run. This seems like a simple concept, but very few traders have the discipline to actually do it.

The final group we are going to be concerned with is the one with very high wins of greater than 70%. More people gravitate to them the closer they get to the 100% mark. These people should do the opposite and leave such traders alone. Unfortunately, few of them do. By taking profit off of the table immediately on appearance, these traders seem to have an extremely high win record. This strategy would work if these same traders also cut losses in the same manner. Traders who have a 95% plus win rate will not be looking at this strategy. They will normally let a loser run ad infinitum and even add to that position much of the time rather than accepting the small loss and moving on with their trading day. Allowing a loser to run like this will in the course of time wipe out months or more of winning trades in one fell swoop and is definitely not the road to success. Keep in mind that one 500 pip loser wipes out all the gains of 500 one pip winners. On the surface, this type of trader has over 99% winning trades. In fact, he could easily have an overall losing record.

Do not think that the reason for this article to be written is to say that no trader outside of a specific range can be a winner. There are certainly many people who can and do win with a winning % outside of the ranges described above. The point of the article is to warn you to look very closely at the trader with a 95% win rate. His losing trades will probably cause him to implode down the line.

Choosing A Forex Signal Provider – Red Flags

December 9th, 2009 Tk Kearns 1 comment

Red flags hover about that you should be able to spot rather easily that can assist you in protecting your forex account. Traders normally come equipped with third party signal providers, some only stay that way for a couple of months, or even worse, weeks. The truth then comes to the forefront that they are really ticking time bombs ready to go off at the least opportune moment.

This treatise is not intended to be an all encompassing answer to the traders problems, it is only a tool to give you a few tips on what to look for and what to avoid. First things to look for:

Stopless Trading

Even the best trader cannot control all facets of a trade, so the ones without stops must not be on your active list. Power outages and connection disconnects are always possible, no matter how smooth everything else looks. Since you are dealing with immediacy here, news can take the market on a swift and lengthy journey. The last trader you want working with you is the one without stops. This is the first trader to avoid.

Win Sizes Out of Proportion to Losses

When a good trader is looking at a loser he may get agitated and pull profits off the trading bench with an unexpected early move. This is good. You certainly want to cut your losses in order to expand your wins, and this ploy should result in more wins than losses. The trader though who has a disproportionate win/loss ratio on his books, i.e. 200 losses, 10 wins, is not the trader for you. Do your research.

New Trading Accounts

These are not actually red flag traders but you should still avoid them. Any trader with only a few weeks worth of records should not be traded on a live account. You can absolutely run them on a demo for a month and take a look at the results, but if the trader is worth trading, they will still be there in 6 months. And by then you’ll have a much better idea of who you’re dealing with.

Large Gains Following a Draw Down

Traders who have abnormally big winners at the end of a sizable draw down have usually given up and are taking one last shot. Their account recovers and to the untrained eye it looks like a solid winning trader. For every 10 traders that try this maybe 2 will survive and bounce back. This means that those 2 are floating around waiting for you. When they have their next draw down they will likely try the same “hail mary” play and the results may not be so favorable. Don’t let someone trade your money on a wing and a prayer.

Remember what was said in the beginning of this article. These pearls of wisdom are only scratching the surface of things to be aware of in the world of forex.

In the Forex market Beware of Affinity Fraud

December 7th, 2009 Tom K Kearns No comments

We were taught at our very young ages to look left and right before crossing the street; pay attention to the brightly colored cross walker that guided us, and the bus lights accompanied by the electrically pulled-out stop sign with the intent of restraining us from crossing the street. Now, in our older years concerns about money and internet scams, prompt us to keep an eye on the predators that prey upon us, like the bully at school after our lunch money.

Some of the lions in the grass eyeing us as meat are Affinity frauds. The identifiable and very specific groups in the money markets such as factions of religion, ethnicity, and demographics are the prey of affinity frauds. In the Forex market it is a new kind of fraud that is being heavily watched. In the field of predators some brokers play, offering alleged investment opportunities to specific areas claiming affinity (similarity, likeness) towards them. This is to create a feeling of comfort so to better reel them in like fish to a hooked worm.

In a world of many peoples’ the enormity of true connection is easily portrayed; via emailing, instant messaging and so on the quick and easy route to get things accomplished and get people connected is as effortless as watching ice cream melt in the son on a hot summer day. Individuals who are making investments with Forex brokers, or other types, need to be fully aware of this, and must carefully research the companies, regulators, and capital of their new found brokers, traders or investors.

A typical move from these swindlers is actually being legitimate with a few real customers, forming the bond, working with them hand in hand, getting the testimonials, and then using that as collateral to fetch others. Unfortunately for the “others” they are the lucky one’s to be embarked on a fraud that can lead to damages they cannot live with. All too common in this situation is the lack of notifying the authority but instead trying to fix issues within the group, leaving them quickly shorthanded and alone.

Avoiding Affinity Frauds

1) Before investing anything call and ask your state or provincial security agencies about sales persons, firm, or company. This is the first thing you should do and is very important. This simple maneuver can save you a good chunk of money. First, find out if the investor or company is registered and then see if the investment is allowed to be sold. Back away if not completely, the investors do not care about you and have a way with words. Research for yourself.

2) Obtain written information from the investor on the procedures of the investment, risks of the investment, and procedures on getting your money out!

3) Get professional advice from an attorney, accountant, or financial planner. If you pay them or get it free from a friend, you will be better off.

4) Earlier people the investor had that were legitimate could be incredibly enthusiastic, however later arrivals may not be so pleased. So pay attention to dates of testimonials. Look closely for odd names and repetitive names. Be AWARE!

Staying on Top of the Forex Market: Trade In, Trade Out

November 14th, 2009 Tom K Kearns No comments

Trade – Noun: The business of buying or selling commodities; commerce.

Verb: To engage in buying or selling for profit.

Adjective: Of or relating to trade or commerce.

The American Heritage Dictionary made it clear enough. Trading and traders, the word alone gives me the chills even though it is spelled differently.

“I’m a trader.”

In the productions trade corporations have lived and thrived. While some succeed others fail horribly. In the beginning stages the drive seems to derive from an implanted thought that you only have one day to live so you must prevail, there is a passion that trails along this forte. Into new realms yet unknown you can be propelled by other facets of trading, once established. Determination sits on the shoulders like the good and bad angel, and communication is the key to success.

Basic types of trading styles

Giving you the breakdowns of how great their system is or which would be best for an individual or mass, “develop a trading plan” seems to be the ideal phrase in browsing through trading websites. There are a lot of trading styles. Let’s keep it simple.

1) Sounding uncomplicated enough, Automated Trade, carrying out multiple entries and exits, monitoring markets, finding profitable targets, trailing stops and protective stops, and completing the details of orders without any need for manual, to type it in. A computer, basically, that does everything for you.

2) A system that is based on currency of the foreign exchange, Carry Trade. Low or high yielding currencies that investors borrow; when the global currency is on the short, retracting. The investors may have to pay up which is not so great about this section, by this I am referring to the foreign exchange rates inconsistency. The investor may have to pay back with less valuable money on a more expensive bill since the exchange rate varies.

3) Day Trade: The buying and selling of various financial instruments such as stock, options and futures. Making a profit off the difference between the buying and selling price of the item is the goal when day traders branch off into diverse specialties. Not working overnight shifts or when the market is closed is the significant fad that stands out about day traders.

Choosing A Forex Signal Provider

November 3rd, 2009 Tk Kearns No comments

With the growing popularity and easy access to the foreign exchange (ForEx) market, more and more people are drawn to it as their financial vehicle of choice. Along with this popularity come all the extras. This includes all kinds of software, trading systems for sale, books, videos, and third party signal providers. Today I’m going to touch on a few points when seeking out a third party forex signal provider.

Before we get into choosing a provider we need to have a good understanding of what a third party signal provider is. A signal provider is a trader or analyst that generates trades that in turn get placed on your account. You can have several signal providers trading your forex account or just one.

The US Constitution states that all men are created equal. Unfortunately this is not the case with traders or signal providers. Some traders look like a million bucks at first glance but turn out to be bad news upon further inspection. To keep away from these types of traders we have to set some guideline to follow when choosing a third party signal provider.

1. First, I make sure that the trader is a winner. This is a little bit obvious already but I could always see losers with 50 to 100 people trading their signals.

2. After that I always look at the longevity of the account. Anyone can get lucky and ride a trend for a week, but it takes a little more to trade profitably for months or years on end.

3. Look at the max draw down. This is the largest peak to trough draw down in equity that the trader has historically had. Some traders refuse to take a loss. This causes them to hold on to losing trades forever or until they turn to a winner. Turning a loser into a winner sounds great, but it will eat up a huge chunk of margin and may never turn around. If it doesn’t turn in your direction, you will have your entire account destroyed by a trader that could have taken a 30 pip loss but held on until it was an 800 pip loss.

4. The first three are easy to look at. They will be displayed right on the main screen of signal providers to choose from. Once you get a few signal providers you are thinking of using, its time to dive a bit deeper into their history.

a. Take a look at individual trades. Are all of the trades placed in the same direction on the same currency pair? If so this trader has not yet seen a reversal.

b. Look at the draw down on each trade. If your signal provider lets trades get several hundred pips away from them and then cuts them short the second they head back into the black you are in trouble. This is a trader who lets losses run and cuts profits short. You do not want to trade a signal provider of this variety.

c. Does your trader add to losing positions? Generally someone who is doing this is trying to average down their entry point and is setting themselves up for failure. Make sure when they do fail that your money is not on the line.

5. Choose a signal provider that suits you. Some traders may provide larger returns over time, but take bigger risks leading to bigger draw downs. This might be OK with you. If you are more conservative and cannot stomach large drops in equity you probably should choose a more conservative trader.

These guidelines are only few of the things that you could try when choosing a third party signal provider. Just remember to try this on your demo account before doing it with real money. It’s your account and ultimately, you will be held responsible for whatever happens to it.

The Tower Of Forex – Terminology To Reach Each Other

November 2nd, 2009 Tom K Kearns No comments

If it is not enough that God came down from the heavens to see the Tower of Babel, and then separate each soul by a foreign language so that they could not talk to one another but now here lies a terminology, a language, to be used amongst the masses of foreign exchange so that they can understand one another leaving non-Forex citizens out of the loop.

Although the terminology used by the foreign exchange inhabitants makes perfect sense to themselves it all sounded like babble to me when I set out to learn it. Traders know best the language of shortened phrases, acronyms, and idioms that explains what they want during speeches of exchanges and trades. Any new or experienced Forex civilian must learn and be comfortable with the language.

You will be left in the dust not being educated and fully prepped in this speech used to converse with fellow speakers. The journey into a career of a Forex trader can be forgotten if confused by the terminology or not aware of the sayings they use. For now at least.

The leading financial market of the world is Forex which trades all global currencies in real time. The basic language is a must to shine at all in the Forex market.

Terminology in the basics

The basic terminology of the Forex globe must be known to get by in the utmost way.

The word bullish refers to one having a general tendency to trade on the short side of a currency pair with the belief that pair will increase in price.

Bearish is having a general tendency to trade on the short side of a currency pair and believing that pair will decrease in price.

Going long refers to buying a currency pair with the hope that the price will go up.

Selling a currency that is not yet owned with the intent that there will be a decrease in price so that the currency pair can be put back at a lower price than it was sold for is called, Going Short.

The smallest price change that a currency can make is called a Pip. In full sized lots of $100,000 it generally is equal to $10 US.

The offering of information to the seller on the variety of prices being offered is Range. It also the highest and lowest prices of the currencies.

The full range of definitions for the Forex language can be found on many websites and dictionaries. If an interest exists in a career of Forex trading you must be full prepped on the terminology needed for conversation. If not you will be separated from your fellow Forex inhabitants by the language of terminology. This surely is not wanted.

One Way To Choose A Forex Signal Provider – Let’s Examine Draw Downs

October 19th, 2009 Tom K Kearns No comments

To begin, let us define the term Draw Down. A draw down is the total amount lost between an extreme high and an extreme low and is the very first thing a person seeking a third party signal provider should pay close attention to. The draw down amount encompasses open positions without taking into account the margin required to prevent a margin call. The burning question becomes then how much draw down is too much draw down? Like many questions asked of the trading business, the answer is – it depends. This is not a cut and dried circumstance; many factors abound in the answer to this question. A person with an account of many thousands of dollars can obviously tolerate more draw down than a person with less, but what else is entailed in the answer?

Besides the size of the draw down number are the events that formulated it. A trader with a draw down of a size so high it makes you nervous but otherwise seems a successful one, you need to take a look at the number of positions he has open at one time. If he opens 5 trades on whatever pair at one time; you can immediately reduce his record of draw downs by 5. The trader who limits the number of open trades can sizably cut down the overall draw down.

Sometimes you will find a trader who has a great track record aside from one major meltdown where a single trade ran out of control for days unchecked. This will produce an abnormal draw down in relation to the trader’s real ability. He may be the kind of guy who can’t recognize when a trade has no chance of coming back to even. He may also be a guy who lost his internet connection at an inopportune time once or twice. Either way you can keep this trader from doing this to your account by setting your own stops for him. Just make sure that you only stop out his trades that are well out of a realistic trading range.

At this point, we are going to visit again our original question. Now that you have accomplished all you can to limit draw down, I will caution you by saying any amount over 35% of your total account equity is way overdoing it. If you let yourself become in a situation where a 50% plus loss is incurred, coming back from it would involve some extremely risky behavior. A 50% loss demands a 100% gain just to get back on the level.

Historical information on the trader is another important consideration to take into account. A lengthy history being available can illustrate to you just how the trader handles rough seas in the trading arena. You want to know this because there will be rough seas in your trading future and you want a steady captain at the helm.

Do not just let go once you have selected your trader. You must constantly monitor his activity on both live and demo accounts. Should his draw down get crazy, it is undoubtedly time to reappraise your situation with him and perhaps delete him from your portfolio completely.
